Goodness I sure hope so!
I have had “Shinseiki no Love Song” and “Shiro ni Somero” on extra-heavy rotation for the past couple of days to say the least. “Shinseiki” really took me by surprise; it’s definitely a bit off the beaten path but a great song nevertheless that you really have to hear at least five dozen times. I am also wonderfully pleased by the B-side “Shiro ni Somero”; I know some out there aren’t too impressed, but I think it’s great. You really must get out there and pick up the single (and the limited ed has a dvd!).
These two were definitely welcome breaks in what has been our year of no new albums; hopefully an announcement of the next one isn’t too far away.

I’m sure those who really are concerned know about the touring Star Wars in Concert events that are happening well pretty much everywhere it seems. This past Tuesday they made a swing into the New Orleans Arena, and I, of course, just had to go. For the most part I have to say I was pleased. The music from the films is definitely served well by having the full orchestra treatment. Also, I was just lusting after the screen because that would definitely be the way to watch the films. Most important: I can now only hear the “Imperial March” live; there’s nothing else that can possibly give that song its due from here on out.
Unfortunately, I do have a couple of gripes: the entire thing is just a little too scripted. There was no mention of where they were, nor anything else to connect the audience with that night’s performance. And, come on, these days you can really score a lot of brownie points by saying something to the effect that it’s nice to see such a showing in New Orleans, or anything else to give the people here a little credit all things considered. It was apparent that we were seeing the exact same thing they saw in Houston a couple of days before, which was the exact thing they saw in Dallas the night before, and so on. The second thing is that some of the sequences seemed a bit forced and as a result a little too long. If you think about it, there are really few “whole” songs that can stand up to a live performance. The two parts I thought were a bit stretched were the portions about Anakin and then the Droids. These were more bits that accompanied moments in the films, and not extended pieces, and when they were all patched together the entire thing seemed a bit forced.
Other than these couple of things, I have to say I was for the most part pleased with the experience. I only got a ticket for myself, so I went for floor seats. A word of warning for those getting floor seats, though: watch out for the extra bit of heat you might feel a couple of times. The crowd seemed to enjoy themselves, there was a bit of cosplay, and the local 501st did its usual spectacular job in engaging the fans of all ages.
The display portion of the tour is pretty much what you would expect. In this venue the memorabilia was spread around the second level, so you just had to walk around to see what was there. Many of the things I’ve seen already, but I was especially thrilled to see Amidala’s senate gown from Episode I:

I’d not seen this particular gown before, so I gave it the most of my attention. As always, I am completely blown away by the amount of detail that was placed in making all of the costumes, and this one is a testament to that fact. (One minor gripe I had about the display, though, is that they didn’t do the face markings on the mannequin; all of the other displays of dresses for the Queens of Naboo had the markings, so I don’t understand why this was different. Oh, well, that’s just me being overly nitpicky I guess.) There are a fair number of costumes and props on display, so it’s well worth arriving early to be able to track everything down and get a good look at everything. I also have to give major kudos to the folks who have to pick up and move these things almost every day; you definitely have an unenviable task.
So in the end I have to say that I was pleased, although there are a few things that could have been done just a smidge better. It’s definitely a very unique experience, and one that most Star Wars fans will find exciting.

While watching SportsCenter this morning (you know the one from Los Angeles because they have a studio in Los Angeles?), they had a short blurb about this weekend’s race at Charlotte and the 48 team winning the pole. Although I am very, very happy at that, I was a bit dismayed by a graphic they showed of the Chase drivers’ current points (I apologize for not having a screenshot). The driver leading the points was named “Jimmy.” Really?! You have got to be kidding me. I’m not saying he’s the current three-time defending champion or anything like that, but you would think they could at least spell his name right.
I’m sure there wouldn’t be a similar misspelling of “Karl” for all of the praise they heap upon him, and if there were you can bet there would be massive memos circulated. I loved how during last night’s practice the broadcast team was aghast that he was running so slow that he must have been in race trim, but when told he was in fact in qualifying trim there had to be some other explanation other than the fact that he and/or his car was slow. And then cue the quick commercial break because they couldn’t hem and haw any longer.
I am just so, so happy that the fine folks at Directv decided to not charge for Hot Pass this year. Even if I’m not watching a driver I pull for, it’s just so much better to not have to hear that constant tv chatter, especially when they really don’t tell you what’s happening on the track. Better yet, the audio we’ve been getting of the play-by-play since the Chase started is a combination of the MRN and track broadcasts, so you really do have a better idea of what’s happening outside of the teams the tv folks aren’t so subtly pulling for. Add to that the bonus of hearing the team audio that might not be heard anywhere else, and you have a really great way to watch a race.

So they’re not illegal, but… October 5, 2009

Time to rail at the windmills again, as I’m just wondering what the heck is going on with all of this retesting of the 48 and 5 cars last week and apparently this week as well. Why is it such a big deal that the cars were found to be legal?! Why is a controversy that the cars were within the rules?! When you get down to the root of it all, there are technically 43 cars every week that are “almost” illegal, save for those that really are working outside of the stated guidelines and regulations. So why is this such a situation, even to where all weekend it was being deemed a “controversy” by the ill-informed (and slightly biased) talking heads out there.
Why haven’t we heard about any of these R&D trips during the previous months? We know that the 14 as race winner and the 2 are the ones going this week, along with the 48 and 5 again, but why don’t they make a big deal about it during the rest of the year? Why now? I just can’t get over the fact that it looks like someone obviously has a reason to hound the points leader and the three-time defending champion, especially at this point in the season.
If the cars are found to be illegal, then fine them. Those are the rules. However, to make such a big deal that cars are within the specified dimensions is just ridiculous.

“After Dark”…Finally September 1, 2009

I caught this past weekend’s showings of new episodes of Bleach on CN, and was pleasantly surprised to find that we here in the West have finally caught up with the episodes with “After Dark” as the OP. (Yay, more Ajikan/anime goodness!) We’re only, what, about a year and a half after this first premiered? I have to admit it’s a bit better than the turnaround for other series. (It’s on a little late for me, so I’m not sure whether the FMA reruns are the eps with “Rewrite” as the OP; that would be very, very cool also.)
Speaking of “After Dark,” recently I’ve been revisiting listening to World World World. As with many of their works, my appreciation of this release has grown over time, and I have to say that “Travelogue” is my favoritest track of all. (Also catching the live version from the 2008 Nano Mugen just really added to my enjoyment of it.) It’s hard to believe that we’ve gone so long without a full release from them, but here’s hoping that as we get to the closing months of 2009, we’ll have something to look forward to in 2010.
